British Book Challenge 2018

I've noticed with taking part in the Goodreads yearly book challenge, that I don't read much written by British author's. This year I've decided to rectify that by taking part in British Book Challenge!

For more info head on over to Tales of Yesterday. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

The following criteria decides whether an author can count towards the challenge:

  • Authors who were born in the UK, live in the UK and are published in the UK
  • Authors who were born overseas but are CURRENTLY living in the UK and his/her books were/are being published in the UK first
  • Authors who were born in the UK are currently living overseas but his/her books are being published in the UK first

Review: Contagion by Teri Terry

31298617

Three words: Family, love, sorrow.

Teri Terry has delivered yet again!!

Contagion is a Sci-Fi/Dystopia that will leave you feeling exhilarated after a roller coaster of emotions, as we follow Shay, Kai and Callie during their struggle to come to terms with a deadly epidemic that sweeps across Scotland and Northern England, along with the loss of love ones, and the uncovering of some earth shattering secrets.

I was glued to the pages from the offset where we meet Callie who is being kept against her will in a secret location awaiting a mysterious cure, but a cure for what? And are Callie’s illness and the one now sweeping the North of the UK the same? If only Shay and Kai can find Callie will they discover the answers and begin their journey to find a cure. I loved how each chapter is narrated between Callie and Shay as it helped gain a wider perspective of what was going on, and with each chapter a count down the pace is fast until the very end were I was left on a cliff hanger, and greedy for more. Contagion is a perfect mix between Science and the super natural. I cannot wait for the next installment to come out!

Top Ten Tuesday #12

Top Ten is an original feature/weekly meme created hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. It's a fun way of discovering new books and genres, and is open to everyone.
This weeks Top Ten is Bookish setting you'd love to visit! Here are some of the places I'd love to see and explore. What would yours be?
  1. Hogwarts/Hogsmeade/Diagon Alley: I know am way too old now to get a letter, but that doesn't mean I haven't given up hope! Who know's, maybe they take in older students whose magical talent took longer to appear.
  2. Middle Earth: I can't think of any one place to visit, so I'd definitely go backpacking. I'd of course avoid the less than savory areas.
  3. Red London: Omg!! I would love to go to the night markets! Or maybe even compete in the Element Games. I can already smell roses!
  4. The Night Court: Velaris, a city for dreamers, it'd be paradise!
  5. Chateau de Montsegur: A real place in the south of France it was the last stronghold for the Cathers during the Thirteenth century. Now in ruins the castle is open for tours. I found out about it whilst reading Daughters of the Grail by Elizabeth Chadwick. The book is purely fictional in terms of the characters but the history is as true as it can be considering how well things were recorded back then. Although it was a place of loss towards the end, it felt like it still holds some significance.
  6. Konohagakure:  Village Hidden in the Leafs, and home to one of the best and most unpredictable ninja's, Naruto! I'd love to visit especially if I got to be a ninja. It's such a beautiful village.
  7. Camelot: I mainly want to go to discover if the myths are true. It'd be amazing if it turned out they were!
  8. Mytica: From the frozen beauty of Limeros, to the woods of Paelsia, and finally the glittering city of Auranos! Again this would be a magical place to go backpacking a round.
  9. Jersey: I've wanted to visit Jersey ever since reading Half Hidden by Emma Blair. Again a real place, there is so such that happened to this island during the second World War. The tunnels the Germans had war prisoners build during the islands occupation are still there, and part of me would love to learn more about what it must of been like for the people who lived there during that time.
  10. Kyralia: The Magicians Guild would be the first place I'd visit! All that magic and knowledge!! I'd write an entire history book on magic, and the surrounding areas.

Review: Night Shift by Debi Gliori

Night Shift by Debi Gliori

Three Words: Beautiful, Poignant, Thoughtful

I love the illustrations & how few words there are. Many feel a depth of despair, or inadequacy, or loneliness, or any other negative emotion that leaves them with a loss for words, and Debi Gliori portrays this beautifully in Night Shift. The cover is gorgeous, and the dragon captivated me straight away whilst it was sitting on our prep trolley. This book is perfect for both those with depression and those without. For those like myself who do struggle with mental illness or times when they've felt down, it is relate-able and a comfort to know you're not alone. For those who haven't experienced depression, Night Shift offers an insight as to what it can be like, helping the reader to understand a bit better how it effects those who do suffer from it.

Review: Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao

33958230

Three words: Power, Magic, Control

I received my copy of a Forest of a Thousand Lanterns in October's FairyLoot Box themed Villainous. I'd heard loads about it from my best friend who loved it, & was very intrigued.

Forest of a Thousand Lanterns is an East Asian re-imagining  of The Evil Queen. Now I love fairy tale retelling especially ones from the protagonists perspective, & could not wait to get stuck in! Forest of a Thousand Lanterns follows eighteen year old Xifeng in pursuit of her destiny that has been foretold by the cards read by her abusive Aunt Guma, also known as the witch. The cards foretell that Xifeng has great potential, & if she so chooses can become Empress of Feng Lu. However to become Empress she must give in to the darkness residing within her, & forsake her Aunt & childhood love, Wei.

Wei has loved Xifeng since he was ten, & has wished to take her away from her aunt. He's portrayed as being strong, & kind along with having talent in sword lore. He believes Guma is poisoning the good he sees in Xifeng, the light that shines within her. Little does he know it is not Guma who whispers to her, but something more sinister & ancient, something that has been waiting, lurking in the shadows for Xifeng.

Xifeng has to choose a path & each promise a better life then what she has now, one of light which will lead to happiness, & the other of darkness which will take her to the throne.

A beautiful mix Asian folk tales & prophecy Forest of a Thousand Lanterns is a dark & captivating read that will ensnare you in its inky blackness, & leave you wondering if you should love or despise Xifeng. I know am still trying to decide. I love her for her development from meek abiding niece to the strong determined young woman she blooms into, yet despise her for her dark ways. I always kept wanting to know how her life would of turned out if she had chosen a different path. Could she of still had everything she wished for if she'd been given a glimpse of it? Or would she still desire to rule Feng Lu?

Review: Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

Three Words: Family, Power, Betrayal

Three dark queens
are born in a glen,
sweet little triplets
will never be friends.

Three dark sisters
all fair to be seen,
two to devour
and one to be Queen

Meet Mirabella, an elementalist with exceptional power, Katherine a poisoner with next to no talent, and Arsinoe a naturalist with no power to speak of. Sisters born with unique powers destined to fight for the throne, and kingdom in which only one can rule. Separated from a young age each have few memories of their time as sisters outside the capital, and each are given to foster families with the same abilities as they do. The families they are fostered with will help train them for the Ascension, the time when each sister will then have a year to dispose of her siblings in order to rule.

I expected something a bit more dark and foreboding with TDC, however it is quite slow to start, and does show promise of becoming darker as the series continues. Arsinoe is definitely my favorite character. She is so down to earth, care free, and will do anything for her friends. Plus being a huge animal lover myself, I would love to have her ability to read them, and have a familiar. I was however quite surprised by this as Mirabella being an elementalist, has a power that I am always drawn to, creating fire! Unfortunately though her personality, or more her involvement with a certain boy, who I also strongly dislike, has lowered her in my eyes. If you've read the book you'll know exactly what I mean, and if you haven't read it, well you soon will. Katherine doesn't really get mentioned much throughout the book, and is seen as not being much of a threat. Sadly she is also the character I despise the most, although I did quite like her, and felt sorry for her up until the end when a certain plot twist throws everything off kilter. Out of all the sisters she has quite possible been through the most, and it is her training and the nature of the other poisoners that adds a little darkness to this first book.

Although it was slow to start, I did really enjoy TDC, and can't wait to dive into the second book, One Dark Throne, and is a perfect read for Halloween.

Review: The Hate U Give (THUG) by Angie Thomas

Three words: Justice, Crime, Family

Excuse me whilst I go hunt for some tissues 😢

A very thought provoking and amazingly written debut novel from Angie Thomas, who has captured a lot of social, racial and political issues which we still face today. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement, this a powerful and gripping YA novel about one girl's struggle for justice.

Meet Starr, a sixteen year old who lives in two completely different worlds: the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised, (I know you've just sang part of the Fresh Prince theme tune!) and her posh high school in the suburbs. Apart from the struggles of keeping her two worlds apart, and hoping her dad doesn't find out about her white boyfriend, Starr's live is pretty average until she witnesses the fatal shooting of an unarmed teenage African American boy by a police officer. The differences between her two worlds are brought painfully to light, and friends show their true colours. Being the soul witness to the shooting also puts a mark on Starr's back. Speaking up could get her killed, but keeping quiet can be so much worse, especially when it comes to fighting for justice not only for someone you know, but for all those who have been wrongly accused or unjustly killed by those who swear to protect.

I have no complaints about this book, or the writing style. Is there things that could of been done differently or better? Possibly, but they didn't jump out at me, nor did they interfere with the flow of the story. Not only does Thomas highlight the struggle between authority and those of a different racial background, but also the difficulties that surround those who are in a mixed race relationship. Whether it's having to keep it from your parents, to strangers in the street who may disagree and make you feel uncomfortable. I look forward to seeing more from Angie Thomas in the near future.

Library YA Recommendations

I am currently working within my local council's libraries, and the wonderful Team Leaders where I work gave me the job of taking care of the Graphic Novel, Manga, and YA section.

Now all three of these areas struggle to get issues so I knew I was going to have my hands full. Luckily I read quite a bit of YA and manga - and occasionally a graphic novel - so I at least had some idea of what might work. First move was to put the YA and manga together, a bit like how Waterstones in Newcastle have it set up. This worked amazingly! Especially for the manga as issues went up within the first week or two, and are thankfully continuing to rise.

This left me in a bit of a predicament however. I mean, how was I meant to top that?

Ideally creating a separate space for Young Adults would be fantastic, however due to limited space I can't do that, so instead I thought about doing a display to try and see if this would help. Originally it was meant to be one title a month being displayed, however due to some rule or such, all the books had to be displayed at the same time. I am grateful that this has been the only bump in the plan. As a compromise we're doing a hashtag on Twitter #YAreadsNT for each book.

September's book is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

Upcoming Titles

Along with the hashtag #YAreadsNT, I will also be posting my reviews on the last Friday of each month for the corresponding book.

Please feel free to join in using the hashtag, even if you are far from our branches.

I look forward to seeing what you think of each of books either on Twitter or via the comments section. So far the idea seems to be working as the above stand is pretty much empty!

I am still waiting fpr a few of the titles, but hopefully the awesome delivery guys will being me some boxes any day now 😊

Thank you!! xx
